A Few Quick Notes on Working Remote

It’s 2021 and we’re in the post-Covid world where you can apply to a position, interview, accept a job offer, and onboard all without ever meeting anyone face to face!

Here are a few ideas that have helped me as I have navigated a completely remote working environment:

  • Create monthly meetings with individuals on your team. It’s difficult to grasp the culture and develop bonds with your teammates when you don’t share a pod or pass them in the hall. Set aside time to create monthly recurring or even one-time meetings with as many of your teammates as possible. This allows you to not only hear personal insights, best practices, and how the team defines success, but it also helps you feel more engaged in the company culture overall.

  • Don’t forget the small talk. When you work remotely, every single meeting is intentional and has a purpose. As mentioned above, there aren’t any opportunities to have a casual unscheduled conversation. So even though it may feel awkward, start the meeting with some small talk! Ask about their holiday weekend, did they watch the big sports game, or compare cross country weather. Sounds cheesy, but I have found that these first 2-3 minutes of breaking the ice can help form bonds with colleagues and clients...even when everyone has their video off!

  • Don’t forget to enjoy it! Many of you probably just said to yourself, “trust me Jada, I’m definitely enjoying working from home!” But for those of you who are still struggling with the blurred lines of work and home, I’m talking to you. Working from home presents a unique opportunity to prioritize self-care in your own space. Block 15 minutes off your calendar twice a day for a mental break. You can do something like: take a quick walk outside, eat an energizing snack, or sit still for some quiet deep breaths. I personally LOVE taking a five minute dance break right by my desk to relax and have a little fun. A must-try!!

Embrace the remote lifestyle by finding ways to connect with your team, your clients, and yourself (through dance breaks!). Transitioning to remote work with your current company is one thing, but starting at a new company fully remote has its added challenges! If needed, talk to your manager about ideas to feel more connected within your company or get help with creating a more balanced schedule.

Be Great,

Jada Davis
